Pu'ukohola Heiau Temple

In 1790 a prophet told King Kamehameha I to build this temple and dedicate it to the war god by sacrificing his principal Big Island rival. Doing so would unite all the Hawaiian islands under him. It was done, and the prophecy was fulfilled in 1810.

There was already a temple (middle of photo) on the site. The "new" temple is near the top of the photo. You can see Janie in the upper right corner at the top of the lower trail, standing in front of the older temple.
